Why Dogs and Cats Are Prone to Illness in Spring

Spring is a season of drastic changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure, placing a great burden on the body until it adapts to the environment.
With changes in lifestyle also occurring, it is a time when particular attention must be paid to the health management of your beloved dog or cat.

What is "Kan" in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, "Kan" (Liver) refers to more than just the organ itself.
It plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of "Ki" (energy) and "Ketsu" (blood) within the body, and is deeply connected to emotions and stress.
"Kan" is particularly susceptible to changes in environment and stress.
While spring is a season when "Kan" activity increases, an imbalance can easily manifest as poor health.

Signs of Stagnant Ki and Ketsu Flow

When the function of "Kan" weakens and the flow of Ki and Ketsu becomes poor, the following signs may appear.
Please check for these during your daily interactions with your pet.

Coldness or Hot Flashes

When touched with the palm of your hand, the upper body feels hot but the lower back area is cold.
Morning discomfort: Unstable balance immediately after waking up, taking time to get up and moving energetically.

Decreased Vitality

Becoming passive about walks and playtime.

Indigestion

Loss of appetite or an upset stomach.

Spring Wellness Tip: Promote the Flow of Liver Ki

The most important thing for health management in spring is to smoothly circulate stagnant "Liver Ki."
Effective ways to do this are moderate stimulation and physical affection.
Gently massaging acupressure points can help regulate the flow of Ki and Ketsu.

Acupressure Point Effective for "Kan" (Liver): Ganyu

The acupressure point we'll introduce today is "Ganyu," which aids the function of the Liver.
Location of the point: On both sides between the 9th and 10th thoracic vertebrae (9th intercostal space).
It's roughly where the vertical muscles along the spine are raised.

Gentle Massage Method for Your Dog or Cat

  • Place your hand behind the shoulder blade.
  • Place your middle finger on the center of the spine, and your index and ring fingers on either side of it.
  • Angle your fingers slightly and gently rub back and forth in small motions towards the end of the ribs.

― Massage Tips ―

  • Behind the shoulder blade, with love: Use a pressure that your dog or cat finds comfortable.
  • Don't aim for perfection: It's okay if you don't hit the exact spot.
  • Even gently stroking the surrounding area can be effective in regulating the flow of Ki and Ketsu.

Try incorporating this into your relaxation time as a form of bonding, enjoying the moment together.

Do not perform if there are wounds or inflammation on the skin, or if the animal dislikes it.
If you notice anything unusual, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian promptly.
